ABSTRACT

It was inevitable that the early months of the new millennium would be an anxious time for the Careers Service. As Bryony Pawinska, ICG’s Chief Executive, pointed out in the January 2000 edition of Careers Guidance Today, ‘Many of our members have been living with the anxiety and confusion arising from almost daily changes in speculation about the future’ (Pawinska 2000: 2). Some feared that while the consultation in which they were about to be involved might modify the detail, the shape of Connexions was set. Nevertheless, a great deal of energy was put into the task of modifying and improving the proposals. The Guidance Council carried out its lead role conscientiously. It was decided that Tony Watts would prepare a series of policy bulletins to keep members up to date and to allow him and Tim Glass, the Chief Executive, to receive regular comment and feedback.
