ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the livelihood strategies on which respondents embarked in an attempt to combat poverty. After a discussion of the terms and debates, a number of strategies are described. Particular attention is focused on growing vegetables, as the main available strategy, and on entering the private sector, which might often be the most rewarding strategy in a larger town or city, but is often inaccessible in the small towns. Migration out of the small town is also considered as a potential, but not always realisable strategy.
