ABSTRACT

The realities of poverty described in the previous chapter are, unfortunately, strikingly similar in many other low-income, urban areas around the world. Poverty and its effects vary tremendously by country and setting, and it is impossible to adequately sum up the socioeconomic realities of diverse parts of the world in a few paragraphs. However, social exclusion plays out in similar ways in the Caribbean, parts of Africa and in low-income settings in the United States.
