ABSTRACT

How do you manage a class? What makes the pupils listen to the teacher? How do you deal with the many and varied questions from pupils? Where do you get the time to work with pupils needing extra attention? This chapter introduces you to the complex issues surrounding working with pupils and how to manage a class. In terms of maintaining good discipline in the classroom, the advice is similar to that given by the dentist-‘prevention is better than cure’. This chapter aims to offer insights into how to establish yourself as a teacher and therefore reduce the opportunities of misbehaviour in your classroom. As with all aspects of teaching, this is advice but, depending on the circumstances and situations, it may or may not work for you. Nonetheless, this chapter is a good starting point for you to establish your own style and approach which suits your personality and temperament.
