ABSTRACT
In both Europe and North America, fewer young people are choosing materials engineering as the career of choice when they leave school. The reasons for this may be many and complex but, in part, it is believed that the subject does not have a high profile in the school curriculum and that the industry is largely ignored by the careers service. Many teachers and careers advisers see the materials industry as declining and lacking in innovation, offering few job opportunities with little excitement.
