ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I will discuss how a specific surgical treatment was perceived and assessed differently according to changing discourses about its risk. I will further show how different views concerning risk were associated with different concepts of medical authority and different power relations, so that taking a particular view of risk also entailed endorsing a particular model of the individual doctor's role in medicine and society.
