ABSTRACT

Variation in body size associated with stage of puberty is more evident among players in CA1 and CA2 than among players in CA3. This reflects the reduced range of variation in sexual maturity status among CA3 boys which is related to the reduced representation, or perhaps elimination of later maturing boys at age and specialization in soccer increase. Maturity-associated variation in body size is greatest among players in CA2, 13-14 years. This is the age range when the majority of boys are in the growth spurt and many are approaching maximal growth or peak height velocity. In contrast, variation in somatotype is less, and is more apparent between boys in PH2 and PH3; somatotype of CA2 boys in PH3 and PH4 do not differ.
