ABSTRACT

After analysing the 1986 World Cup for shots and crosses, Partridge and Franks (1989a, b) concluded that the success of a team is considered in terms of being able to score more goals than the opposition in a particular game. The importance of scoring goals is paramount for any team’s success. To achieve the highest success, coaches use performance analysis to examine attacking play, in particular, and also identify the strengths and weaknesses of their own team and their opposition.
