Discussionsofthemonumentbymodemhistoriansofartandarchitectureshowa generalagreementonthemeaningoftheterm.Inpapersandlecturesonthesubjectthewordisnotcommonlydefined,butabroadconsensusappearstoobtain thatamonumentisatangible,materialconstruction,usuallyofstone,brick,or metal,thatservestoremindpassersbyofsomeperson,event,orconcept.Thereis, however,anothermainsenseofthewordmonument:awrittenrecord.Thuswhen theVictorianscholarMarkPattisonwroteofthecriticalstudyofthemonumentsof Romanandfeudallawhewasnotreferringtothematerialmonumentasweusuallythinkofit,buttowrittentexts.
