ABSTRACT

Inthemid-1960samajor-onecouldsay,majestic-cleavageoccurredinthedomainofthepsychotherapies:withitsfullmaturationandwidedissemination, familytherapycametooccupyanequalbutwhollyopposedintellectualandclinicalcampfromthepreviouslydominantandindividuallyfocusedpsychoanalytic psychotherapies.Thisfractureprobablyrepresentedanextensionormodemlocalizationofancientandfamiliardualisms:themind-bodyproblem;naturevs. nurture;theconceptofthementalapparatusaseitherbeinganendowmentoran acquisition.Withinphilosophy,Locke,Hume,Mills,andthelogicalempiricists representanexternallydetermined,exogenicviewofmindashavingbeenformed, evencreated,outofencounterswithanorganizedrealworld;whereasSpinoza, Kant,Nietzsche,andevenChomskyrepresentanendogenicviewofmindassoinnatelyorganizedandstructuredthatitcreatesknowledgeoftheworldoutofunordered,naturallyoccurringdata.Thuswehavetwooppositeconceptsofmind: oneasformedbyexperienceandtheotherastakingexperienceintoitsownpreexistingform.
