Itiscuriousthatnearlyallabstractnotionsarefemininenouns.Icannotthinkof onethatismasculine.Itwouldhavebeenveryembarrassingtothemachoworld oftheeighteenthandnineteenthcenturiestohavetoomanygreat"Liberties," "Charities,"andsoonaspublicmonumentsrepresentingwomen.Thesameis trueofthenamesofmostcountries,especiallyinLatinforms:Britannia,Gallia, andthelike.OnlyrecentlyIlearnedthatthenineteenthcenturyavoidedrepresentationsofwomeninofficialimagesofstates'victories.
