ABSTRACT

Now that we have considered the current situation in British prisons in relation to numbers, conditions, security and legitimacy, the focus of this section is on the ‘experiences of prison life’. This is obviously a vast area, and here we will focus on two particular areas: the experiences of female prisoners, and the question of whether prison can ‘work’ in terms of rehabilitating those convicted for serious offences.
