ABSTRACT

What did the inhabitants of the Roman world believe happened after death? There is no simple or short answer to this question. Roman beliefs were varied and ranged from the idea that death was a complete end, to a welldeveloped geography for a separate world of the dead. We can gain a taste here for some of these views, but it remains difficult to assess how many people believed in what, exactly how these beliefs developed and changed across time, and the extent to which they varied by geographic region.
