ABSTRACT

As explained in Chapter 1 (see especially Table 1.1), the present research brings together four distinct studies, the first of which – in this chapter – focuses on the Chinese domestic context of microregionalism and the first two questions underpinning the research: How should we define and characterize the key components of microregionalism connecting Guangdong, Taiwan and Japan? What kinds of policy environment and what actors in the host and home countries are needed to support cross-border economic relations? These questions are investigated further in the second (Chapters 4 and 5) and third (Chapter 6) research studies, which examine the international (Japanese) context of microregionalism and the regional (Taiwan Strait) context.
