ABSTRACT

Identification is the production and reproduction during interaction of the intermingling, and inseparable, themes of human similarity and difference. Collective identification emphasises similarity – although it is only a matter of emphasis – and this will be the focus of the next chapter. The collective identification of differences, as process and with respect to its consequences, is the distinctive intellectual territory of Norwegian anthropologist Fredrik Barth, and the focus of the present chapter.
