ABSTRACT

Achieving sustainability is not easy. Policymakers will face challenges such as uncertainties related to technological development, people’s resistance against thresholds that constrains their behaviour, or against trading off humans’ short-term needs with those of the biosphere. We acknowledge that there is no unique solution. New measurements and high-quality data are required to allow for better analysis and narratives of the different pathways that have been followed. Finally, we identify issues that are likely to be central in achieving sustainable development: population growth and urbanization, resource availability and use, planetary and human health, and involvement and participation.
