ABSTRACT
From the middle ages until the late nineteenth century a number of institutions can be discerned as precursors of the modern concept of ‘civil society’ in Iranian society. The institutions in question are: clerics, sanctuaries and the places of refuge, khaneghahs, the elders, tribes and clans, ayiarraan; peasant groups, and Asnaf.
