ABSTRACT

During the second half of the nineteenth century and for most of the twentieth century battles were fought by educationists and interested professionals about how to teach reading and how children learn to read. Major warfare erupted with important and influential ‘education generals’ winning the hearts and minds of their foot followers and troops on the ground. Many casualties occurred when new methods were introduced. The heaviest casualties can be found among those with SpLD including the dyslexic population. An overview of popular reading methodologies provides information and insights for current users, including teachers and learners.
