ABSTRACT
In 1711 Alexander Pope in his Essay on Criticism gave sound advice to apprentice writers when declaring that ‘True ease in writing comes from art, not chance, / As those move easiest who have learned to dance’. If reading is to the mind what food is to the body, then writing is the lifeblood that sustains and nourishes it, helping to develop thinking skills and improving reasoning powers.
