ABSTRACT

This chapter is divided into two parts. Part one begins with relevant statutes and cases on sexual discrimination, racial discrimination and disability discrimination. It moves on to discrimination on the grounds of sexuality and the legal rights of transsexual people in their acquired gender. Harassment is viewed as a form of discrimination and as part of a separate statute – the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, which, from June 2006, now applies not only to stalking but also to harassment in the workplace. Part two focuses on safeguarding children (child protection) in sport and starts with the challenge of definition, research and evaluating risk. Illustrative criminal cases are followed by the legal and policy frameworks and the standards now used in sport in the UK.
