ABSTRACT
Perhaps the most significant achievement of the Formalists consisted in their recognition that the word ‘literature’ would have to be ‘screened critically’ if it were to serve any useful purpose. In proposing a highly specific meaning for the term, the Formalists placed their literary criticism on a self-consciously theoretical footing by rigorously defining the object-the literariness of literary discourse-to which it should address itself.
