ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with some of the historical and contemporary views of children and childhood and with how the social and educational systems in England provide for the care and education of young children. It is hoped that through questioning, reflection and analysis you will:

• Challenge popular and stereotypical views in order to understand more about the diverse experiences of children

• Understand that children’s development is not fragmented but is holistic in nature

• Gain insight into the complexities of working with children from birth to five years.
