ABSTRACT

Pupils don't see chemistry as related to their ‘real’ world. A chemistry trail attempts to correct this impression by identifying a few examples of chemistry actually happening in the immediate environment of the school, preferably fairly simple chemistry that is accessible to pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4—and some even to Key Stage 2. The development, use, presentation and format of chemistry trails is discussed and exemplified. Examples are given relating to various types of building materials, to metals and to air pollution, and further ideas suggested.
