ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with activities that are school-based but take place outside the classroom. Here the focus is on astronomy, where star-domes and star parties bring to life a somewhat remote area of the curriculum. Next, we see how visits to telescopes, the National Space Centre and research organisations can help students learn about so-called ‘Big Science’. In the two final sections, we outline how visits can help students learn physics in context and become aware of areas of future study and careers while also enhancing their enjoyment of the subject.
