ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the use of newspapers as a resource for teaching and learning about science. It begins by suggesting why they have a place in both the primary and secondary classroom and how they may be employed. The use of newspapers as a context for reading activities is then considered in more detail, focusing on news stories, feature articles and graphics. The use of newspapers as a context for writing activities is discussed and illustrated by a ‘front page’ prepared by primary school children and a published article written by secondary school students. Finally some characteristics of news reporting are outlined.
