ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the use of music therapy in the treatment of psychosis. The relationship between patient and therapist is seen as central and its therapeutic value is considered using concepts derived from the British object relations school of psychoanalysis. The psychotic condition is discussed with particular reference to Kleinian and post Kleinian concepts and a general theoretical view of individual music therapy is considered in this light. Finally a case is described which reflects the application of such concepts to clinical experience.
