ABSTRACT

One of the men who served well the cause of the Anglican hierarchy was Dr. Robert Some. About May, 1588, his work, A Godly Treatise Containing and Deciding Certaine Questions, was published. The date in the preface is May 6, 1588, and on this same day the book was entered in the Stationers’ Register. The book, which was directed against “popish and Anabaptisti-call “recusants, contained nine points or theses which Dr. Some supported. Evidently a copy of this book was brought to Barrow in prison, who wrote marginal notes on the entire volume of 37 pages. The second edition, issued in September, 1588, has 36 pages, a table of ten points, and 164 additional pages refuting John Penry. Since Barrow used the first edition, which had been annotated by him and then seized by the prison officials before January 1, 1588/9, we may be certain that these marginal notes were written in 1588.
