ABSTRACT

There are two versions of this examination. One is printed on signatures B iii recto-C verso (pp. 13-18) of The Examinations of Henry Barrowe John Grenewood and John Penrie [Dort?—1593-96]. The other is in Harley Manuscripts 6848, ff. 14 recto-18 recto. It is likely that Barrow wrote the account of his examination within two or three days, and then smuggled out the sheets. Then copies were made for the use of the brethren. One of these, I believe, is Harley Manuscripts 6848, ff. 14 recto-18 recto, and probably another was used for the printed version which appeared sometime between 1593 and 1596. The two versions vary slightly. Therefore, I have collated them and have reproduced the printed version, together with the manuscript variations. Where there are differences, I have indicated the variants in the manuscript version within round brackets. Any editorial material to clarify or supplement the text is included within square brackets.
