ABSTRACT

This brief summary of the views of the Separatists may be entitled a spiritual declaration of independence. It is one of the earliest manifestoes, and represents the position of Henry Barrow, John Greenwood, and the congregation which was meeting in private homes in 1587. If the reader will examine this manifesto closely, he will see that it consists of two main parts: the first portion contains five1 statements of purposes and intentions, and the second portion consists of four charges or transgressions levelled against the Church of England.
