ABSTRACT
The disappearance of formal empire did not mean the end of the colonial experience in the opinion of many critics. For them decolonization required much more: a fundamental change of outlook and attitude, of heart and mind. In an aptly chosen phrase, “bush clearing” was declared necessary.
