ABSTRACT

For many years there has been a tendency in print journalism training to describe news stories as pyramids. I think this means that the ‘point’ of the story is sharp and succinct, and is then supported by more detailed information in layers. This conventional view suggests that to shorten a story, the sub-editor can simply cut from the bottom, without altering the core meaning or losing any essential facts. I am not convinced that this idea helps us to write broadcast scripts.
