ABSTRACT

Temporary agency work is a familiar phenomenon in Australia. The phrase itself is somewhat unfamiliar, and it is often replaced by alternative terms such as ‘labour hire’ (applied in blue-collar occupations), ‘temping’ (applied to clerical and secretarial variants) or ‘agency nursing’ (applied in nursing). In this chapter, however, we stick with the more general term ‘temporary agency work’ that seems to be accepted as the mainstream terminology in Europe.
