ABSTRACT
One of the key questions concerning any geotechnical structure is ‘is it safe?’. To begin to answer this question, the geotechnical engineer must address two points:
• How are the applied loads (due to external agencies and the soil’s own weight) distributed within the soil mass as stresses?
