ABSTRACT

The threat of invasion and aerial bombings disrupted British society, causing the dispersal of staff and equipment of government departments, and of cultural and scientific institutions. 1 However, according to Marwick’s four-tiered model, in which war affects society: 1) by its destructive aspects; 2) by the test it provides of a society’s structures; 3) by its encouragement to participate in the war effort; and 4) by its psychological impact, the disruption to French society was greater still. 2
