ABSTRACT

This chapter assumes that use of computers in history classrooms will enhance learning of the subject (although this assumption is questioned in the final section). However, classrooms, teachers and computers exist within institutional contexts, therefore what is possible by way of the use of computers in history classrooms is partly dependent upon the policies and practices for information technology (IT) followed by individual schools. This chapter focuses on the provision of information technology in ten English secondary schools and considers the implications of the description and analysis for history teachers who may wish to use computers in their classrooms.
