ABSTRACT
Performance of National Excellent Plays (celebrating the 50th anniversary of
the founding of the People’s Republic of China), the 6th China National
Theatre Festival, the 5th Chinese Yingshanhong Folk Drama Festival, the first
Chinese Peking Opera Festival, the first International Yueju Opera Art
Collection Performance, the first Chinese Chuanju Opera Festival, the first
Chinese Folk Yueju Opera Festival and the Shantou International Chaoju Opera
Festival. All of these demonstrated that at a turning point for China in the
social, economic and political fields, Chinese drama – which has been deep
in crisis for a long time – has gradually found ways of adapting to the
immense economic pressure of the new social environment, in a situation of
changing artistic appreciation.
