ABSTRACT

HRVOJE IVANKOVIC The important political changes that occurred in Croatia after the elections in January

2000 were unfortunately not followed by more radical breakthroughs in the area

of cultural politics. For Croatian theatre this primarily means that its organisational

structure was left intact, although its foundations were established back in the socialist

era. Moreover, the changes in the financing of theatrical activities did not significantly

help or encourage the activity of independent theatres and companies. Croatian

theatre thus remained an environment characterised by routine and lack of

invention. During the last two years considerable chaos continued to rule in the

repertoire of most institutional theatres and only a few productions managed to

rise above the mediocre. Still, it is a consolation that attendances did not diminish.
