ABSTRACT

These priorities were an expression of a desire to re-establish the balance

between Paris and the regions by reinforcing the partnership between central

and regional government. As a response to the new artistic realities which came

up against a static and overburdened institutional system, a large part of the

new funding, more than half, was earmarked for the support of new

disciplines: dance, circus, street theatre, contemporary music and experimental

work carried out in new venues described as ‘intermediate’ or ‘alternative’.
