ABSTRACT

DINA ZIROPOULOU Before reviewing the theatrical events of the past three years, it may be useful

to present a picture of the way theatre operates in Greece.

There are two state theatres – the National Theatre and the National

Theatre of Northern Greece – based in Athens and Thessaloniki respectively.

Additionally, since 1985 Municipal and Regional Theatres have been operating

officially in 16 Greek cities, subsidised to a great extent by the state.
