ABSTRACT
Leikfelag Islands (The Icelandic Theatre Company). This debate culminated in
accusations put forward by the Association of Independent Theatres against the two
major theatres in Reykjavik, Leikfelag Rekjavikur (The Reykjavik Theatre Company)
and Thjodleikhusid (The National Theatre), regarding alleged misuse of their official
funding and abuse of their dominant competitive position. Other controversial
happenings were the change of artistic directors at The Reykjavik Theatre Company
and the change in the laws on The National Theatre, allowing the artistic director to
be rehired beyond the former maximum of eight years at the helm.
