ABSTRACT

GUNA ZELTINA After twelve years in a ‘market-place’ situation after the country regained its

independence in 1990, Latvian theatre has more or less adapted to its severe

economic conditions. In a situation where state subsidies for our nine profes-

sional repertory theatres cover just about 20% of their running costs, this

adaptation mainly resulted in a complicated balance between art and entertain-

ment in the repertoire of our theatres. Another balance has also recently been

achieved, that between the wish of Latvian theatre professionals (especially the

younger generation) to accumulate international theatre experience and their

desire for self-realisation through national material.
