ABSTRACT

VALERY KHASANOV 2001 was marked by two events, different in character but equal in importance.

First, the Theatre Workers’ Union of the Russian Federation held its national

congress. This association, which brings together interested parties from all over

Russia, plays a major part in the country’s theatre life. Their congress took

place on 22 nd

and 23 rd

October. The delegates discussed the running of their

organisation in the perturbed social circumstances which have arisen from the

radical changes presented by the market economy. The last decade has been

an extremely difficult one. Theatres have had to contend with the ever-

increasing necessity to adapt to an existence in which competition and

commercial success have become determining factors. Alexander Kaliagin was

re-elected as Chairman of the Union.
