ABSTRACT
FELIX and JEFFREY TAN Singapore is only a little dot on the map of the world. Located east near the equator,
made up of 3.2 million people – Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian – Singapore
has always taken pride in its survival success story in the area of business and cultural
cohesion. Primarily made up of migrants in the early generations, the current genera-
tion of Singaporeans has grown up in the period since independence from British
rule was won in 1965. Today in 2002, the current concern of Singaporeans about
being a soulless society, made up of ‘stayers and quitters’ has led the People’s Action
Party (the long time ruling political party) to embark on wide-ranging discussion and
reflection at a national level with a view to ‘Remaking Singapore’.
