ABSTRACT

I believe it was Will Rogers who once remarked that the Good Lord continues to make more people, but he isn't making any more land. The world population of humans will probably double at least one more time (from 5 to 10 billion) before, hopefully, leveling off sometime in the next century. In any event, space and many nonreplaceable resources (i.e., resources having no conceivable substitutes such as clean air and water) will increasingly be impacted or in short supply. Whether we like it or not, society will have to learn how to do with less. We may be able to learn how to do this by studying natural ecosystems that are adapted to thrive on scarce resources.
