ABSTRACT

Gabai A functionary in the synagogue (usually translated as warden) who assures that individuals are assigned to and called up to the podium for the performance of specific aspects of the worship, e.g., reciting the blessings before and after the reading of each Torah lection. While the Torah is being read during worship, a Gabai is stationed at each side of the podium to follow along with the reader and to assure that no errors are made in the reading.
