ABSTRACT
Military underwater systems have been in the vanguard of underwater technology development since the earliest times and the research and development of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) is no exception. While specific details of potential UUV missions and military UUV technology remain classified, there are a number of historical and generic aspects to the business of fighting at sea and from the sea that can be used to illustrate some of the current thinking on the way ahead for the development of military UUV missions and technology.
