ABSTRACT

On 1 November 1954, the principal Algerian nationalist movement, the FLN, began a struggle for independence. A ceasefire was agreed to in March 1962 and independence was declared in July 1962.

In August 1962, the Algerian provisional Government transferred its functions to the Political Bureau of the FLN [the Front de Libération Nationale] and in September a National Constituent Assembly was elected from a single list of FLN candidates and the Algerian Republic was proclaimed. A new government was formed with Mr Ahmed Ben Bella as Prime Minister.
