ABSTRACT

This chapter intends to pursue the process of investment in the seven sub-Saharan countries in more detail. The first section provides a comprehensive analysis of how investment is distributed, why it is undertaken, and how it is financed. The second section goes on to analyze the determinants of investment using the more traditional investment theories. The Data in the RPED Surveys The RPED surveys provide data on two aspects of investment: first, they have a question on the value of the “initial plant investment installed and how much it cost.” If acquired, the valuation entered is that at the time of

purchase or inheritance (Section 3, Part B, Q.1). The data, apparently, pertain only to machinery; land and building are excluded.
