ABSTRACT

Science is a formal method of enquiry through which knowledge is generated in successive fashion using the processes of description, explanation and prediction (i.e. description→explanation→prediction→description etc.). In this chapter, we consider the analysis of sports behaviours within this scientific framework. From this viewpoint, we report on contemporary research that has sought to analyse sports contests using various models of sports performance. The incompleteness of the various models developed to date, however, indicates the difficulties presented in identifying a formal description for sports contests.
