Second, there is an analysis of sentence meaning. The intended meaning of a sentence may differ from its literal meaning (e.g., saying, “Well done!”, when someone drops the plates) as in irony, sarcasm, and metaphor. The study of intended meaning is known as pragmatics. The context in which a sentence is spoken can also infl uence its intended meaning in various ways.
